Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon milk (for the chocolate batter)

Ingredient Highlights

  • Butter: Provides moisture and richness, ensuring the cupcakes have a tender crumb.
  • Buttermilk: Adds a slight tang and keeps the cupcakes soft and moist.
  • Cocoa Powder: For the chocolate swirl, giving the cupcakes their rich chocolate flavor.
  • Vanilla Extract: Balances the chocolate with its warm, sweet flavor.

Instructions

Prepare the Batter:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 12-cup muffin pan with cupcake liners.
  2. Mix the Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. Cream the Butter and Sugar: In a large bowl, beat the butter and granulated sugar with an electric mixer until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Add the Eggs and Vanilla: Beat in the eggs one at a time, then add the vanilla extract, mixing until fully combined.
  5. Alternate Wet and Dry Ingredients: Add the dry ingredients in three batches, alternating with the buttermilk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Mix just until combined—do not overmix.

Make the Chocolate Batter:

  1. Separate and Add Cocoa Powder: Remove ½ cup of the vanilla batter and place it in a small bowl. Stir in the cocoa powder and 1 tablespoon of milk to create the chocolate batter.

Create the Marble Effect:

  1. Fill the Cupcake Liners: Divide the vanilla batter evenly among the prepared cupcake liners, filling each about halfway. Add a spoonful of chocolate batter on top of the vanilla batter.
  2. Swirl the Batters: Use a toothpick or skewer to gently swirl the two batters together, creating a marbled effect.

Bake the Cupcakes:

  1. Bake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean.
  2. Cool: Allow the cupcakes to cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
